The roots of the plants are typically harvested once the plant has reached at least 4-5 years in age. Roots are ready to be harvested in Fall. Before completely dry, roots are often sliced lengthwise into the shape of tongue depressors.
USDA Growing Zone(s): Astragalus grows well in zones 5-9. Astragalus is an herbaceous perennial from the legume family and is quite easy to grow. It prefers sandy, well-drained soil and quite a bit of sun exposure. It is important to water moderately. Astragalus is cold tolerant and also able to grow in high temperatures.
Traditionally astragalus is considered to have the following properties/actions:
Adaptogen: helps the body adapt to stress and to exert a normalizing effect upon bodily processes
Hepatoprotective: helps prevent damage to the liver
Diuretic: promotes urination
Hypotensive: lowers blood pressure
